About Us

Cantab DC

The Cambridge Society of Washington, DC, a.k.a. "Cantab DC," is the Washington DC area hub for Cambridge alumni. Our group is open to all those formally affiliated with Cambridge University, regardless of their college affiliation, faculty or years of attendance. We seek to enrich the experience of all alumni in the DC area. There are no membership dues, although donations are highly appreciated.

Cantab DC is incorporated in Washington, D.C. as an independent 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, run by local area alumni in a volunteer capacity. It is governed by a Board of Directors, which manages the society liabilities and which also appoints a Society Board  to organize events for all its members.

Elections for the Society Board are held at the October Drinks, following the Cambridge academic calendar. Early voting by e-mail has also been allowed since the 2009 election. Nominations are usually due by September 1, and announcements will usually go out in the newsletter for several months prior. (Multiple nominations are welcome, and will be noted on the ballot.) All positions are one-year in tenure, and are confirmed by the Board of Directors.

Our group is member-driven and provides a range of meet-ups and other ways of keeping in contact. Cantab DC has established several keystone events that serve as social benchmarks for our activity calendar. They are the:

  • Monthly First Thursday Drinks at the Willard Hotel
  • Semi-regular coffee/tea at the World Bank
  • Summer Garden Party
  • Boat Race Viewing Party
  • Cambridge-Oxford Potomac Challenge Cup
  • Guy Fawkes Night
  • Christmas Party
  • Burns Night

Alumni are encouraged to contact the Board about proposing or assisting with an event.

Cantab DC also liaises with Cambridge in America and Cambridge Alumni Relations Office, and is happy to work with the University as well as with individual colleges and faculties on event-planning and in other areas. Cantab DC also works with other British university alumni groups in the DC region.

Members are encouraged to read our FAQs and membership outreach page. Further questions about Cantab DC should be referred to the Board's service account at our Contact Page
