The Cantab DC Reading Club is now planning on delving into its next book, "Beowulf" as translated by Seamus Heaney. The reading club will meet next on March 20th at Matchbox Restaurant at Merrifield (Address: 2911 District Avenue Fairfax, VA 22031). If you are interested in attending please email Sam Ferguson: samdferg@gmail.com. The book can be purchased online. Newcomers are welcome!

A note from Sam Ferguson (Fitzwilliam)

I miss Cambridge formal halls. Not just the grand old halls, cuisines, and gowns, but even more so the conversations. Where else will you find an aspiring sociologist, chemist, theologian, and barrister deep in conversation about everything from polymers and statutes to fine wine and mince pies? Over these meals our particular fields of learning sought relevance in a much broader world of ideas and, as thinkers and learners, we were broadened and deepened by each other’s own academic pursuits and passions. Not to mention, many delightful friendships were made along the way.

The aim of the Cambridge Reading Club is to foster a similar environment of learning and fellowship for Cambridge Alumni in the greater DC area. The format will include reading two books a year chosen from the Cambridge University Press Canto Classics series (amongst other titles), which includes the best of Cambridge publishing, both classic and recent. The group will meet roughly four times a year, or twice per book, over a meal and drinks. The hope is that the rich content of the books, along with the diversity of interests and vocations around the table, will foster meaningful conversations about things that matter. Along with these conversations, of course, new friendships will be made and University memories retold.
